Sales Tips - Defining Your Attitude

Most of you would have probably heard the old saying "Your attitude in life will determine your altitude", have you ever stopped to think what this really means?

Lets rearrange some words and see what we come up with,

"A lazy attitude and philosophy will no doubt destroy any talent and skill you possess, leaving you eventually with the company and reputation of mediocre results."

Interesting to comprehend when you look at it from this angle. I guess the point I am really trying to get across is simply this, often we work very hard in upskilling our selves in certain areas, motivating our selves for success, we do all the physical work to get our selves equipped to get more sales, however the most important part is sometimes neglected, ATTITUDE!

Your attitude is what drives all your physical learning and behaviors, if your attitude is off in the slightest you can be sure that this will be reflected in your results. Often times when results do not appear to be going your way the answer can be found in your attitude somewhere.

OK, lots of talk about how important attitude is with in the sales process, now lets get into some specifics, let us take a closer look at what makes a positive, focused successful attitude and lets equally examine what makes a lazy, no good, amateur one.

Firstly lets start with what makes up an lazy amateur attitude, Now when i say negative attitude it is important to note that you only need slight negativity to completely deter your focus, so be sure to understand that negativity is like wild fire, it only takes a small spark and once it catches has the potential to ruin a whole crop.

Perhaps the easiest way to illustrate what makes up a negative attitude would be with a list of typical behaviors.

Negative Behaviors such as;

- Thinking as if you are a victim of a conspiracy
- Losing your temper
- Not taking full responsibility for your results (both good and bad)
- Lack of discipline (thinking, i can just do it tomorrow)
- Lack of preparation
- Giving up easily after a setback
- Joining in on office gossip
- Complaining to management

There are probably so many more to add to the list but i think based on this list it is clearly visible as to what behaviors are associated with a negative attitude. Now looking at the above list you may have very well noticed a couple of behaviors that you have been or are still guilty of portraying to this day.

The honest truth is we have all been guilty of these behaviors at some point in our selling careers, it is what makes us human, but here is the important part. It is only when you choose to eliminate these behaviors from your attitude that you will begin to define your true attitude and essentially begin to multiply your income by 5, by 10, by 20.

Remember, anyone of the above behaviors set off can have a devastating effect on the rest of your income, you must be disciplined at all times never allowing yourself to slip, not even for a second, especially on days when you feel weakest.

It is this very act of discipline that forms the basis for your positive behaviors ahead.

Now that we have covered the various behaviors and consequences of a negative attitude let us take a look at exactly what goes into making up a sales King's attitude behaviors;

- Always taking full responsibility for all results (good or bad)
- Developing an attitude of NO Excuses (no matter what)
- Every failure is lined with a positive lesson
- Today is a new day with new opportunities
- Always be prepared
- Dress and smell for success
- Act like a sales king at all times (language and persona)
- Never participate in negative conversations
- Associate with other sales kings
- Always be disciplined (if you say you will do something, then do it)
- Be creative, constantly educate your self by reading, etc).
- Become an expert in your field
- Always know where you are going
- Do not be afraid to lead

There are most likely many others I could add to the list, but I think we now have enough of a comparison to see the striking difference between a negative attitude which only serves to set you back in your quest for success and a positive attitude which gives you every opportunity to move forward and earn what you deserve.

If you only take on one thing from this article I urge it to be this, Please embed this point in your mind forever,

"A lazy attitude and philosophy will no doubt destroy any talent and skill you possess, leaving you eventually with the company and reputation of mediocre results."
